Gijón City Council, Spain
The Gijon City Council, through the Local Agency for Economic Promotion and Employment and specifically the Economic Promotion and Innovation Department carries out different actions in order to promote the local economy and to stimulate the entrepreneurship culture.
The economic promotion activities are fitted in the Pact for the economic promotion, competitiveness and employment 2004-2007 Gijon Undertakes, which was signed by the Gijon City Council, the Employers Federation of Asturias and the local representatives of the Labour Unions: UGT and CCOO.
The Economic Promotion and Innovation Department concentrates on three main areas, which are as follows:
- Entrepreneurs
- Enterprises
- European Projects
With regards Entrepreneurs, the Council tries to stimulate the entrepreneurship culture and to foster the positive attitudes towards entrepreneurial initiatives. In order to do this, actions in primary, secondary school, university and with unemployed and other groups are carried out as well as offering personalised consulting for start-up enterprises.
In relation to Enterprises, the Council offers information and consultation in issues demanded by the business-net such as procedures, legal topics and grants. It also has collaborations with other entities through economic promotion projects and actions in the following fields:
- Internationalisation
- Labour risks
- Environmental management
- New technology
To support this, we take part actively in fairs with Inegozi (once a year, meeting forum between investors and technological enterprises or projects) and Gijon Entrepreneur, which is a group stall with entrepreneurs projects in each fair.
Currently, we are involved in five European projects related to economic promotion: Atlantic-Net, Emplenet, Econfinnet, Innovint and Steel Belt, an enterprise space.
Furthermore, the Gijon City Council has the International Affairs Department which is the municipal office responsible for the management, co-ordination and dissemination of the European and International activity within the City Council.
