University of Wroclaw
The University of Wroclaw is located in the Lower Silesia region, in the south-west of Poland. This institution which is three hundred years old, is one of the most significant research and education centre in Poland with over 3,000 academic staff and over 40,000 students.
Wroclaw is among the top research universities in Poland. It has world-class research teams and facilities both in the field of natural sciences and humanities: Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy, Natural Sciences, Law, Administration, Economy, Social Sciences, Historical and Pedagogical Sciences, Philology. The results of research are published, patented and used in various studies and technical descriptions.
The University of Wroclaw participates in numerous European and international programmes, e.g. Framework R&D, CRAFT, COST, Leonardo, Phare, Tempus, Culture 2000, Asia Link, Eureka. The University has numerous international links with universities and research institutions in Europe and the rest of the world, especially with Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Austria, Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Russia and the USA.
After the accession to the EU, the University projects are financed also from structural funds. Faculty and student research, as well as participation in international projects are supported by central administration offices, including Office for the European Programmes and Co-operation with the Region, Foreign Relations Office, Division of Scientific Research, Bursar Office.
The University is developing its activity in the field of innovation. It is one of the shareholders of Wroclaw Technology Park, a company aiming at stimulating the advanced technology industry development.
Recent projects concerning innovation:
- "The Development of Regional Innovation System" - creating transfer of knowledge and technology centre at the University
- "Research grants for PhD students aiming to improve Lower Silesia potential" - grants for innovative young scientists' research consistent with key areas outlined in Regional Innovation Strategy
- "Academic Entrepreneurship Incubator" - new initiative of academic Career's Office
- Participation in "Lower Silesian Advanced Technology Centre"
The University seeks to promote the flow of knowledge into industry and society. It works with industrial and other partners to promote development and improve the quality of life in Lower Silesia. The University co-operates with Lower Silesia Marshal's Office (www.umwd.pl), Wroclaw Technology Park (www.technologpark.pl), Wroclaw Centre for Technology Transfer (www.wctt.wroc.pl), Lower Silesia Chamber of Craft and SMEs (www.izba.wroc.pl), Lower Silesia Employment Office in Walbrzych (www.dwup.pl).
